Looking to give your old mukluk boots a new lease on life? Well, you've come to the right place! After offering this as a discreet local service for the last 3 years, we've decided to offer it year-round for others via the web. Our resoling service is here to help you extend the lifespan of your beloved boots.

Say goodbye to the very common issue of melting rubber bottoms and picking up unwanted hair, dirt and grime. With our recycled rubber compound applied, you can rest assured that your winter boots will not only last longer but also provide grip on snowy terrain. Just a heads up, this special compound is available exclusively in black and it does look significantly different than the original sole. It has a highly textured surface.

Oh, and did we mention? Any holes in the soles will be skillfully repaired at the same time, so you can really get the most out of your favorite moosehide  mukluks.

Resoling process and general information

Melting rubber sole of a mukluk winter showing caked with animal hair, gravel and grass

Typical repulsive melting sole of a mukluk. This particular example had been repaired/recovered at some point in it's life prior to coming into the shop (NOTE: the piece of sheeting). There are several ways of fixing these soles, they all vary in how long they last.

Cleaned up rubber soles of mukluks

The very first thing to do, is to remove as much of the old rubber as possible. I have a dedicated machine for doing just that. It aggressively removes the old disintegrating rubber and cleans the surface. The goal here is to get down to a stable, clean surface.

All sides are also sanded of old glue, rubber, etc. The cleaner the better .

After the old rubber has been shaved down and the sides cleaned off, the sole and sides are wiped down with a cleaner to further remove any contaminants. The boots are allowed to dry before moving onto the last step.

The final step is a 2 part compound coating of recycled rubber with an industrial marine adhesive. With this method, you get excellent waterproofing, longevity, and grip. It's also flexible and lightweight compared to other methods used. The end result is an attractive, textured black sole.

Common Questions

Question 1: Is this available in colors other than black?

Answer: No, black only

Question 2: How long will they last?

Answer: Your results may vary. It depends on how fast the old rubber continues to degrade. A house is only as strong as it's foundation!  My personal pair is still going strong after 3 seasons. I try to remove as much of the old rubber as possible. At the end of the day, it is just a repair. If you are wearing them day after day in soaking wet barn yard conditions and sloshing thru rain and mud puddles on the daily, then they might not last as long.

Question 3: You're a leather shop, why are you offering this service?

Answer: I've worn mukluks daily in the winter for decades and the melting bottoms are a persistent problem. It's annoying leaving residue from the bottoms of your boots everywhere you go. It's also gross that they pick up hair, dirt and fuzz and no one could or was willing to fix them. So, I started to.
